Potassium Deficiency (Hypokalemia): Urokit 10 helps replenish low potassium levels in the body, which can occur due to various conditions like excessive vomiting, diarrhea, or certain medications (e.g., diuretics).

✔️ How does Urokit 1080 work?

Urokit 10 raises potassium levels in the blood, thereby correcting potassium deficiency. This supplement aids in proper nerve and muscle function, including heart rhythm regulation.

✔️ Side Effects of Urokit 1080

• Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain. Taking the medication with food may help reduce these side effects.
• Serious: Gastrointestinal issues such as bleeding, blockage, or perforation; high potassium levels (hyperkalemia) which may cause muscle paralysis or cardiovascular complications.
• Allergic Reactions: Rare but serious allergic reactions can occur.

• Symptoms of Overdose: Hyperkalemia, which can be life-threatening, causing muscle paralysis or cardiac arrest.
• Treatment:
  • Close monitoring of heart rhythms and serum electrolytes.
  • Elimination of potassium-containing supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, and high-potassium foods.
  • Administer intravenous calcium gluconate, dextrose-insulin infusions, or sodium bicarbonate to counteract high potassium.
  • Dialysis may be required in severe cases.

Urokit (Potassium Citrate) is primarily used for the management of conditions that involve abnormal urine chemistry, which may lead to the formation of kidney stones. 

✔️ Pharmacology of Urokit 1080

• Potassium Citrate works by increasing the urinary pH (making it more alkaline) and raising urinary citrate levels. The increased citrate binds with calcium, reducing the likelihood of calcium stone formation (calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate).
• It also inhibits the crystallization of stone-forming salts such as calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate, and uric acid.
• Potassium Citrate therapy reduces urinary calcium, further decreasing the risk of stone formation.
• Effectiveness: The rise in urinary citrate occurs within the first hour after a dose and lasts for 12 hours. Regular dosing helps maintain a steady level of urinary citrate throughout the day.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Urokit 1080

• Severe Hypocitraturia (Urinary Citrate <150 mg/day):
  • Start with 60 mEq/day (30 mEq twice a day or 20 mEq three times a day with meals or within 30 minutes after meals or at bedtime).
  • Urinary citrate and pH levels should be monitored every four months to adjust dosage.
  • Doses above 100 mEq/day should be avoided.
• Mild to Moderate Hypocitraturia (Urinary Citrate >150 mg/day):
  • Start with 30 mEq/day (15 mEq twice a day or 10 mEq three times a day).
  • Adjust dosage based on urinary citrate and pH measurements.

Oral Form: In cases where oral potassium chloride is used, it should be taken with food to minimize gastrointestinal irritation.

✔️ Interaction

• Potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, amiloride), ACE inhibitors, and ciclosporin: May increase the risk of hyperkalemia when combined with potassium supplements.
• Antimuscarinics: Delay gastric emptying, which may increase the risk of gastrointestinal side effects, particularly when using solid oral forms of potassium.

✔️ Contraindications

• Hyperchloraemia.
• Severe renal or adrenal insufficiency.
• Addison's disease, severe tissue damage (e.g., burns), severe dehydration, or chronic diarrhea.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category C: Animal studies have not been conducted, and it is not known whether Potassium Citrate affects the fetus. It should only be used in pregnancy if needed.
• Nursing Mothers: The effect of Potassium Citrate on potassium levels in breast milk is unknown. It should only be used during breastfeeding if necessary.

• Renal or cardiac disease: Potassium levels can rise dangerously if kidney function is impaired.
• Dehydration: Potassium replacement must be done cautiously.
• Regular monitoring of plasma potassium levels and kidney function is essential during therapy.
